The Zeta Phi Beta Sorority is Founded

Zeta Logo

On this date in 1920, Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc., was founded at Howard University in Washington, D.C., by five women as the sister organization to Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc.

Zeta's founders knew that it was time for a new and progressive organization, one that would place more emphasis on community service than on socializing and elitism. With the encouragement of two members of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc., the founders chose not to embrace the tenets of established sororities. Thus, Zeta Phi Beta was founded to encourage the highest standards of scholarship through scientific, literary, cultural, and educational programs.

Zeta sisters promote service on college campuses and in the community, foster sisterly love, and exemplify the ideal of Finer Womanhood.
